Working in the port

The employment figures for the Port of Antwerp are stable and high. The port creates a total of 60,656 full-time direct jobs. But many more people in Flanders owe their job indirectly to the port. These 142,348 full-time jobs account for 6.5% of the employment in Flanders and 3.7% of the employment in Belgium. Most of these people live near the port. The majority (16,000) live in Antwerp. Others live in East Flanders, the rest of the Province of Antwerp and the southern provinces of the Netherlands.

Attention to sustainability in employment

To assure the continuous, sustainable growth of jobs in the port, the port community pays attention to

  • safety (fewer occupational accidents).
  • engagement of employees (offering a competitive salary and other attractive benefits).
  • diversity (cultural background, male vs. female ratio, newcomers…).
  • training and competence development.
  • solutions for commuter traffic.
  • activation of jobseekers for shortage occupations.
  • employment security.
  • social employment.

Filling vacancies in shortage occupations

More than six out of ten employees in the Port of Antwerp have a secondary education level at most. This means there are plenty of job opportunities for people with this profile. The port is always searching for talented logistics workers. The list of vacancies in shortage occupations grows daily. Talentenstroom connects jobseekers and employers with each other in the logistics sector. This initiative lists the available jobs, offers support to jobseekers and companies and organises training by partners to prepare employees for a job in this sector.

 

Employment security

People want to keep working. In the past, people preferred a long career with one company. Nowadays, employees assure themselves of a job by having a broader outlook. They no longer search for a job within a company but also in other companies in the same sector. The port is a perfect environment for specialised employees (in logistics, transshipment, petrochemical industry...), assuring they can remain fully active for longer in their career.

Social employment

Social enterprises create opportunities for disadvantaged groups. These enterprises have a social impact as well as making a financial profit. Several companies are good examples of this:

  • Van Moer employs people with a physical disability.
  • Katoen Natie actively seeks to employ older people, people who do not speak Dutch fluently, unskilled workers and so on.
  • BASF offers support to students who are the first in their family to enter higher education, to tackle social inequality.

You can also work with social enterprises, by subcontracting work to them. The Scheldt Left Bank Corporation, for example, regularly works with social enterprises for receptions and the maintenance of green spaces.
